Operation Benjamin recently completed a project to replace several gravestones in the Philippines with new headstones containing the Star of David. A ceremony at Manila American Cemetery in February of 2020 honored five Jewish-American soldiers buried approximately 75 years earlier under the Christian Cross.
One of those soldiers, Arthur Waldman, a private from Michigan, died early in the war at the age of 27. Captured by the Japanese, he survived the Bataan Death March, only to die of beriberi heart failure, likely as a result of starvation, in Tokyo at a Japanese POW camp.
At the ceremony, Waldman’s great-niece Vicki Katz, along with her husband, placed stones on the Star of David marker at his grave as their own private memorial of his sacrifice. His grave is number 56 in row 10 of plot E.
